Great Falls Historical Society Closing
We have some sad news to share with you about the Great Falls Historical Society (GFHS). After more than 40 years of documenting and sharing Great Falls long and illustrious history, the time has come to dissolve the Society. GFHS has struggled in recent years. Its membership has declined and attendance at GFHS presentations whether actual or virtual has been quite low. We haven’t been able to find volunteers to take on leadership roles.
As a Board, we have been reviewing the situation and considering ways to preserve and use the Society’s resources. Our current thinking is that the best way to preserve and put these resources to good use is to transfer the GFHS records and artifacts to the Virginia Room of the Fairfax County Library System. The Virginia Room collects and maintains all forms of historical records. By doing this transfer, we can assure that our records will be maintained and preserved and made available to the public. This makes the Collections Department of the Virginia Room an ideal location for our records and artifacts. We will also transfer funds to assist in the costs of managing these resources. The Society, as we know it today, will cease to exist.
We appreciate your support of the Society over the years and regret that this action is necessary. If any of you would like a refund of any membership fee you paid for 2021, please contact Doug Cobb, our treasurer, at Douglascobb@me.com. We will be happy to accommodate you.
